A Norwich-based dentist has been picked to live in the Olympic Village later this year to treat the teeth of top athletes from around the world.

Dr Bimesh Sawhney, owner of Riverside Dental at Wherry Road will be working without pay at the Olympic Games in London this summer.

“My friends encouraged me to apply for it because I love sport. I play football, hockey, squash and I have just got back from skiing,” says Dr Sawhney.

Having graduated from the famous Guy’s Hospital, now part of Kings College Hospital in London, Bimesh has worked in both the NHS and in private practice. He now runs his own private practice in Norwich with the surgery located near Norwich City Football ground and the train station.

In 2008, Dr Sawhney took up a post at Guy’s Hospital to teach, making him one of the youngest members of staff. In addition, he is an active member of the British Dental Association and an elected member of the Norwich Local Dental Committee.

So what does he envisage doing at the Olympics? “It might be for emergencies, for the boxing or martial arts, I could be searching for teeth in the ring. Playing hockey means I have seen and treated a few things, such as my battered and bleeding friends, so I think I can cope!”

For more information about Dr Bimesh Sawhney and Riverside Dental, visit the website at http://www.riversidedental.co.uk

A Norfolk finance company has experienced a record year by helping thousands of businesses across East Anglia to expand even when some have previously been refused finance.

Credo Asset Finance arranges asset finance for plant, IT equipment and vehicles and has agreed £16 million in the last 12 months and £78 million of finance during the firm’s seven years.

The company has seen a 24% increase in turnover in the last year and moved to new premises in Thorpe St. Andrew, Norwich after recruiting three new people.

The Finance & Leasing Association says that asset finance is the largest alternative lending option to conventional bank loans and overdrafts for SMEs*. And Managing director Simon Gray believes Credo’s growth is due to businesses looking for better rates and a surge in firms being refused finance from other lenders.

To help companies who have had difficulty obtaining finance, Simon set up Credo Capital Finance Ltd in 2010 to lend its own money. More than £1 million has been lent to businesses across East Anglia to date.

Simon adds; “With bank lending falling nationally, it’s vital that businesses have alternative choices of affordable finance. We believe in offering a traditional approach where trust, local knowledge and personal judgement are more important than credit searches, scores, property equity and charges.”

This higher risk strategy is paying off as none of the company’s current agreements are in arrears.

“We have had an incredible year, helping more businesses than ever to grow by providing better rates and advising on the best finance options for their business. We have also worked in partnership with companies to offer finance to their customers including Norfolk car dealerships and the UK arm of BNI – an international networking business.”

2012 is also set to be a successful year; “We are on track to lend £3 million on our own book this year. Plus we are investing in PR, Marketing and business coaching to raise awareness that asset finance allows money to be kept in the business instead of draining cash flow.”

After completing 800 broker deals in 2011/12, the business is launching a dedicated car finance division later this year called ‘Deal Saver’.

A third peregrine falcon chick has hatched on the nesting platform installed by bird of prey conservation charity the Hawk and Owl Trust on the spire of Norwich Cathedral.

The third chick hatched at about 2.30pm today and could be seen when the male brought some food in and the female fed the chicks.

Leanne Thomas, Education Manager for the Hawk and Owl Trust said “This is fantastic news. We had almost given up hope that the last two eggs would hatch but we now have a third chick. The male is bringing in plenty of food so the chicks are all well fed and looking healthy so far.”

The evolving story can be viewed via webcam on the Hawk and Owl Trust’s website www.hawkandowl.org and also on the Norwich Cathedral website www.cathedral.org.uk.

The Hawk and Owl Trust is running a watch point at the Cathedral where the public can view the birds through telescopes. The watchpoint is running daily when the weather is fine, 10am until 5pm throughout May. Please check the website for future dates. Please note that there is no parking at the Cathedral itself so use city car parks. If you are interested in volunteering to help at the watch point please contact the Hawk and Owl Trust on 01328 856788 or sign up via the website.

Visitors to Sculthorpe Moor Community Nature Reserve can enjoy a cup of coffee and watch the peregrine webcam in the visitor centre as well as images from other cameras around the reserve. The reserve is open every day except Mondays and the visitor centre is open from 9am until 5pm.

Wombling is a non-profit organisation based in Norwich, working for people and planet.

In some ways similar to the car boot sale, jumble, and attic sales – our big, INDOOR, year-round events in Norfolk are a great way for sellers to get the feel-good of rehoming things they no longer want, thus helping to keep them out of landfill – not to mention gaining a bit of extra cash!

For buyers it’s a great way to grab a bargain, and to give a new lease of life to useful stuffs. It’s a win-win as far as we can tell!

Money raised from pitch fees goes back into the Wombling social enterprise, therefore back into the community.

Our Sale Events aren’t affected by the weather!

@Hellesdon Community Centre, Middletons Lane, Norwich, NR6 5SR

Peregrine falcon chicks have started to hatch on the nesting platform installed by bird of prey conservation charity the Hawk and Owl Trust on the spire of Norwich Cathedral.

The first of the four eggs hatched at about 7.30 this morning. The female did not start to incubate the eggs fully until after the third egg had been laid so all the other eggs are expected to hatch within the next 48 hours. The male peregrine will continue to hunt for the growing family whilst the female broods and feeds the small chicks. It will be 5 to 6 weeks until the chicks begin to fly.

Leanne Thomas, Education Manager for the Hawk and Owl Trust said “We are so excited now that the eggs have started to hatch. It is fantastic that these amazing birds have bred on such a historic building in the city and it will be wonderful to be able to watch the chicks growing thanks to the technology of the webcams.”
